Tomorrow, we'll finish discussing "Apostrophe to the Ocean".  Tonight, read the author notes on Shelley and Keats (pages 542-3 and 556-7 respectively).  Take about five notes down per author.

Tomorrow, we'll go over the answers to Act II (your yellow sheets, so be sure to have them completed). Period 2, make sure you answer questions #1-5 on Sonnet 130 (pink handout).
Students were also given 10 new vocabulary words from Act III today, and they are as follows:

1. ascend (v): to move upwards; to rise
2. beguile (v): to enchant or charm, often with the intent of misleading someone
3. calamity (n): a serious event causing misfortune
4. asunder (adv): into pieces (as in tear asunder = tear into pieces)
5. jocund (adj): cheerful; merry (think joyful or joke)
6. prostrate (v): to bow or kneel down to show humility or adoration
7. abhor (v): to hate or shun
8. effeminate (adj): unmanly; having the characteristics of a weak woman
9. adversity (n): a state of hardship or misfortune

The Romantic Poetry projects were handed out today.

They will be due on June 7th.  We finished reading the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in class. Students need to complete two questions and a quote on this poem (in addition to the other quote and literary device which was Wednesday's homework).

Additionally, students should be working through the Romantic Unit readings from pp. 456-472 for Monday.  They should be able to answer the 10 questions on page 572 by Monday's class. Here's the reading schedule I gave the class for this--Wednesday night pp. 456-462, Thursday night pp.462-469, Friday night/weekend pp. 469-472.

Today, we finished watching Act I.  Period 3 still has to go over the Study Guide answers to Act I, which we will do tomorrow.  Both classes will start reading Act II tomorrow.  For homework, students need to finish the vocabulary sheet on Act II.  In addition, Period 3 students need to have a stellar answer for their assigned questions.

Today, we finished reading Act I.  Students have to complete the pink study guide and do the first page of the vocabulary sheet for Wednesday.  The cartoons are due on Thursday.  Just as a reminder, the Act I vocabulary words are as follows:

For Tuesday, make sure you have completed a question and quote on William Wordsworth's "My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold" and "The World Is Too Much with Us".  Also, complete questions #2 and 3 on page 485 for "My Heart" and questions #1 and 2 on page 489 for "The World".  Make sure you are answering the correct questions for this second one, there are questions on other poems on this page.

Also, make sure you know the vocabulary words posted last Wednesday for the test next Wednesday.  The test will cover Lady Mary Chudleigh "To the Ladies" pg. 355 (I had forgotten to mention her), Pepys, Pope, Swift, Burns, Blake, and Gray.

The test will consist of 10 vocabulary words, 10 multiple choice questions, five quotations that you need to explain, and a short essay question (you'll have three prompts from which to choose) for a total of 65 marks.

On Friday, we read scenes ii and iii from Act I.  This weekend, complete the questions for these scenes and study the vocabulary words.  If you don't have a copy of the questions, email me and I will send you them.

Today, we read "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray.  Students read the author notes and took notes on him, then they did a question and quote on the poem, which will be due on Friday.  Finally, students were put in groups and assigned particular stanzas to analyze for Friday.

The Restoration test will take place next Wednesday.  The topics will be Pepys, Pope, Swift, Burns, Blake, and Gray.  The vocabulary words you will have to know are as follows:

Today, we reviewed the Chapter 12 questions, finished discussing symbolism and looked various examples of irony in the novel.  Finally, we wrote theme statements for the novel.

A paragraph was assigned for Friday asking students to discuss one example of irony as it related to a character or and event or an object.  Students must give the context, use a quote (with page number) explain the kind of irony and state why this ironic instance is important to the novel.

Tonight, come up with one question and one lit device for "The Rape of the Lock".  I'll ask you to come up with one more question and a significant quote for Wednesday's homework.

Finally, tonight find three examples of irony from anywhere in the novel.  Make sure one of your examples relates to an event, one example relates to an object, and one example relates to a character.
