Making Contact With All Students

Hello everyone, teachers will be formally reaching out to their Period 3 classes starting tomorrow, but I invite all of my students to send me an email to let me know how they are doing or ask me any questions.  I will get back to each of you as soon as I can.

As for my Period 3, English 10 students, I will start calling you at 10 in the morning tomorrow, working my way alphabetically through the class.  When you recieve a blocked call, that will be me.

Looking forward to connecting with you all.

Update for all classes

Hi Everyone, this week the Sutherland staff will be video conferencing to plan how schooling will look for the forseeable future.  You will be hearing more of our plans soon.

In the meantime,  I hope you all are reading regularly.  Libraries are still loaning ebooks.  I'll have more information on accessing eresources for reading soon.

Also, my Grade 10s were assigned a creative project that was to be due April 6th.  Right now, that is on hold. If you have already begun this, please send me an email.  If you have not yet begun this, please wait for further instructions.

Thanks, and stay healthy!

To all students

I hope you all have a good, restful break. Stay healthy!

English 10

For the students who were away in the last few days, you can write the tests after school on the Tuesday we return from break in my room.
Your short story projects are due Monday, April 6th.  Stay tuned for further announcements.

English 8

Today, students submitted their newspaper articles. When we return to school, we will read one final story, do some review of the stories and short story terms, and write a unit test.  Students will also write a 2-3 page original short story.  During the break, students should complete the short story review sheets on what we have read so far:
1. "The Golden Pants"
2. "The Sweater" (view the story HERE.)
3. "The Old Man"
4. "A Secret for Two"
5. "The Dog of Pompeii"
6. "The Sentry"

The six boxes on the review sheet are as follows:
1. Plot, setting, mood
2. Conflicts and how they end (star the most important conflict)
3. Point of view and a significant quote
4. Characters
5. Symbol (important object) and irony
6. Moral and/or Theme

English Lit

Those of you who are writing essays on the first two independent novels, please email me your work.  The students who read "The Kite Runner" can email me their essays or hand them in on the day we return from break.

PLEASE ALSO SEND ME YOUR COMPLETED VOCABULARY SHEETS.

Finish the cartoons on the vocabulary sheet.  I gave you a list of the vocabulary words you will have to know for the quiz next week, so start reviewing now.  Also, tonight, identify (through highlighting or underlining) three different sensory images--other than sight--used in "The Dog of Pompeii".  The senses that you will look for are the ones that appeal to sound, touch, smell and taste.

English 10

Your in-class essays are tomorrow.  Bring your planning sheet.  If you do not bring your sheet, you will still have to write the essay.  If you miss tomorrow, you will have to write it with me after school next Tuesday.  You will not be able to take it home.

English Lit

Write 3 questions on Pepys' diary and answer one of them.  Also, do 3 quotes.  Explain why these quotes are significant.  Panel discussion/fishbowl on Into the Wild and Brave New World for Friday.

Do the first section (matching) on the first page of Vocabulary sheet 2.  Then, list the various reasons Pompeiians give for their frequent earthquakes and why Mt. Vesuvius smokes in the story "The Dog of Pompeii".  Point form is acceptable tonight.
