Your final five visual journals for To Kill a Mockingbird are due on Friday.  You can hand them in on Thursday in class, or hand them into my box in the office on Friday.  Remember to submit all 10 journals and include your half-way marking sheet as I'll be filling out the second page of that sheet.  If you have any questions about this, you can see me at school --I can often be found in the library work room-- or email me.

Socials 10

There will be a quiz on the conflict in the Northwest either on Friday or Tuesday, depending on how quickly we get through the material, so make sure that your master sheet notes are complete.

English 8

I've given you an extension on your comic assignment.  The new due date is Tuesday, March 31st.
On Friday, you will have a test on The Outsiders.  The format of the test will be as follows:

10 true/false questions
7 fill in the blanks
3 quote recognition statements
3 multiple choice questions
7 short answers
1 paragraph question

When reviewing for the test, go over all handouts and questions.  Pay specific attention to information about the characters and their relationships, the different conflicts in the book, symbols, plot elements (exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution), and the purpose or themes of the novel (think about why SE Hinton decided to write the book in the first place).

Finally, there will be a vocabulary quiz on Wednesday on the following words:

Vocabulary from chapters 9-12

1.         underprivileged (adj)
2.         conformity (noun)
3.         rueful (adj)
4.         leery (adj)
5.         taut (adj)

When we return from Spring Break, we will review the last of the vocabulary from The Outsiders, and the next day, we will have a test on those 20 words.  Also, I will collect your comics assignment for The Outsiders on March 30 or 31, depending upon which day your class falls.  The original due date was March 27, but you might need an extra weekend to do this assignment, hence the extension.

The comics assignment will consist of 12 - 16 (maximum) cartoon boxes, that, when read together,  tell the story of any one of the characters from the novel except Ponyboy.  Make sure that your comic flows logically to tell your character's story.  It should communicate a beginning, a middle, and an end. As well, your comic should stay faithful to the story you just read.  You may add extra information or scenes, but they should still fit logically within the narrative framework of S.E. Hinton's novel.

I hope that you all have a happy and restful break.

English 12, Block 7

For those of you who did not get a chance to write down the Synthesis Essay topic before you left:

"Holden Caulfield from Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye and Christopher McCandless from Into the Wild both go on journeys looking for an escape. In a synthesis essay, explain their personal philosophies/ outlooks on life."

This will be an in-class writing assignment during the week after Spring Break. I wanted you to have it ahead of time so that you know what to expect- you can write down notes, create an outline, memorize a finalized copy of your paper- but you will be doing the writing of the essay IN CLASS.

Also, Sociograms are due the Wednesday after Spring Break (the 25th). Keep working on it during your reading of the novel.

Have a good Spring Break!

English 12, Block 4

You will need to have read up to Chapter 22 for the in-class write tomorrow.
